HOMEWORK

  1. Complete all in-class tasks as defined in the "INSTRUCTIONS" section of Studio Session 9. Reread the instructions carefully. In addition, make a gallery.
  2. Write a CCO community blog in which you discuss the advantages and disadvantages for students of using KEEP SLS. Should/could the features of KEEP SLS be integrated with other social technologies such as the CCO (Elgg), Wuala and SemanticScuttle? Explain.
  3. Use KEEP SLS to create a discussion of ideas in Chapter 9 of "Wikinomics". Create a snapshot summarizing and commenting on one of the main parts of the chapter (see below for "part" allocations) and do so by Monday midnight. Responsibility for summarizing/commenting on chapter parts is as follows: Geeks, Wikis, and Global Domination (Bill), Rise of the Wiki Workplace and Best Buy's Bottom-Up Innovation (James), Social Computing in the Enterprise (Sahar), Peer Production in the Workplace (Yernur), and Waking up to the Wiki Workplace and A Demographic Kick for Change (Arthur).
  4. Contribute to each of your fellow students' discussions by Wednesday midnight by using the "Blog This" feature in KEEP SLS. Authors will get bonus points for responding to discussion comments, and commenters will get bonus points for continuing the discussion!
  5. Work on your final project.

3. Make your portfolio public, and then search your classmates' portfolios, and leave some comments for them.

4. Connect to your Wordpress.com or Blogspot.com (Blogger) blog and make a blog post about one of your portfolios within KEEP.

5. Create a group and invite some classmates to join your group, and then share with your group and collaborate on your portfolio for individual projects, for example, provide some idea or questions on the group portfolio.

Thank you for pointing out the important of keeping a diary. I agree with you of the important of that but I think is also a overhead of the overall work. I think one should practice that so he/she can balance between writing every single activities and the important ones

I think that that "paradigm wars" have pervaded the social sciences for over a century, so I doubt that they will abate any time soon.  To me, the biggest worry with the "flexible" design, as with most subjectivist, not exactly but maybe kinda replicable, research is the potential for the researcher to let the data lead him right to where he always wanted to be in the first place.  This is what "Science" is supposed to guard against.

But, what else can you do, when strict quantifiability and serious laboratory experiments are just not feasible?

The paradigm wars also surprised me. I am wondering whether the wars are over yet just like the discussion about feminism is already over.

I also agree with you about the importance of the ethics in doing research. We should not conduct an experiment without concerning about the consequences in the observed objects, especially, if they are human or living things that are always involved in the real world research. Although, the result of the research is interesting, it is also hard for the people world to accept that result of the research. This would be another reason that makes the real world research more difficult to be conducted.

Thanks for bringing up the ethical issue. Sadly to say, in a time in which there are no witnesses to observe and confirm accuracy, some researchers are unethical. This was pointed out many times by Booth, Colomb and Williams in the "Craft of Research." Remember the story about Booth's student who had to shred questionnairs that do not meet the goals of the study?

I also agree with you that Robson book's boxes are so useful for someone who wants to conduct this kind of research. Some points I found in these boxes caused me thinking about the past, when in one of my first projects, I really needed to such tips related to a specific task.

Congshan,

I agree with you about the ethical aspect of doing research. Robson advocates this issue, among the three ones he describes as characteristics of a research, as well. I also think “systematically” and “skeptically” doing of a real world research are of great value, too. Although, in many of the researches of this kind being conducted at the time being, unfortunately, rarely we can find these characteristics.
