IS 366a Reflection Narrative

The most important take away from this course is the practical knowledge and experience from actually conducting qualitative research that I could not get from the text book our lectures.

The course highlights the actual conceptualization of a qualitative research problem, conducting literature search, coming up with a preliminary research question, negotiating access to the research site, conducting observations and refining the research question.

An important part of the process was being a part of, and witnessing the actual negotiating process using gentle persuasion with stakeholders to gain access to the research site.

An interesting aspect also is the inherent dynamic nature of the qualitative research question.  In particular how the research question adapts to the object of the study, the research question changes as new observations are made and qualitative data collected.

We started out with an objective of looking at, the impact of access to information at the point of care in the emergency department.  We then refine this question to focus on electronic medical records in the emergency department, which is not much deviation from the original objective because of the emergency medical record present information at the point-of-care quite effectively.

For further exploration warrants further investigation:

  1. Qualitative Clinical Investigation:

Introduction of an EMR system reduces emergency department length of stay

  1. Qualitative study of the impact of ED EMR system on:

      Overcrowding and waiting time

      Renege rate

Error reduction, safety and patient satisfaction

  1. Qualitative study of the impact of EMR system on nurses and physicians workload and job satisfaction
  2. Qualitative study of the ability of EMR system:

To monitor current and near future ED crowding

      To enable efficient communication

This page holds work for the Fall 2008 IS 364 Course with Dr. Gondy Leroy. It is based off of this assignment . You can view other people's portfolios by clicking on the IS364 tag on the bottom of this page, or by editing this page and looking in the sidebar.

My ReflectionWriting Reflections

1.      Research methodology, lack of detailed information on experiment design and evaluation.

2.      Sampling, detail on population size and criteria for selecting the sample.

3.      Stakeholders, should list all interested party who will be included in and affected by the research study.

4.      Experimental design, need to explicitly define the focus of the study and why a design science methodology is selected.

Writing Reflection Guidelines

Take your time during the semester to read papers (published and new), write your own, and learn from feedback from reviews.
  1. What were the three most damming elements that led to a rejection of a paper, a difficult to read paper, a boring paper, etc. Describe them in a few sentences. Explain why you include them. Example: sentences without content.
  2. What are the three elements that you didn't know yet and that you plan to include in your papers from now on, to increase their chances of being published and read by others. Example: be specific and honest about the results in the abstract.
  3. What are other elements will you look out for, either positive or negative. Example: their/there, then/than, if/whether.

Presentation Reflection Guidelines

Take your time during the semester to watch presentations and to give your own while watching the audience.
  1. What were the three most damming elements that led to a boring presentation, an uninteresting presentation, a presentation without content (you didn't learn anything). Describe them in a few sentences. Explain why you include them. Example: too many details of an algorithm without explaining the big picture.
  2. What are the three elements that you didn't know yet and that you plan to include in your presentations from now on. Example: visually showing the structure of the presentation (audience will always know if it's the introduction, or conclusion)
  3. What are other elements will you look out for, either positive or negative. Example: when to use title slides or not.

Presentation Reflections

1.      Reading the slides, the presenter spends time reading the PowerPoint slides instead of making eye contact with the audience.

2.      Time management, presenter did not prepare and rehearse, thereby allowing the presentation to exceed the time limit, which the audience did not like.

3.      Too much information on slides, the sides contain too much information for the audience to understand.

4.      Interaction with audience, presenter lacks confidence in standing in front of an audience, and was unable to connect with the audience.
