Davis and Parker gave a very well organized guidance for doctoral students on how to write a good quality dissertation in their book “writing the doctoral dissertation”. The main purpose of their book is to guide the students to a systematic approach that helps them to write their dissertation in short time with good quality. The book also helps the master students to write their master thesis. The authors in the first chapter gave two examples for two doctoral students that show the benefit of being organized and focused on the thesis. Additionally, the authors explained the management approach’s three stages in writing a doctoral dissertation. Those stages are pre-dissertation stage, selecting the dissertation topic, and finally management of research and writing. Moreover, the authors gave a characteristics list for a good dissertation. Basically, any dissertation should contribute to knowledge; this contribution can take many forms such as: new or improved evidence, new or improved methodology, new or improved analysis, and new or improved concepts or theories. In general, this book covers every single issue that any student can face in his/her writing dissertation’s journey.

Yes, suggestion on working with advisor and dissertation committee is very useful for us. It also guides me how to interact with advisors. Sometimes different cultures make me feel misunderstand with others. Learn to cope with problems and learn to deal with advisors are very challenging as well as learn to do an excellent research.

I also think that finding appropriate topic for dissertation is the hardest one. Sometimes, we should prepare earlier, but we also have to finish it soon. Due to the fact that, it may be others doing the same topic as ours.

Sam, I also found that writing tips in Appendix C is useful. I'll use it with Booth and Robson's tips as well. You know what, sometimes I learnt from my classmate's writing styles.

Doing the Ph.D. in US give me more experience than in Thailand. Not only learn from professor, but I also learn from other colleague. It's good to share experience in class because sometimes it is never written in any book.

Your reading of the two case studies is very real world. It may be that despite the best of intentions, life rears its head and one might choose to yield to the exigencies of life like Carthly. Given the fore knowledge of the options, cautions against underestimating effort and duration, and the tools to more deliberately plan and execute the dissertation project, it's easy to assume hands down that Maren's path is the one everyone would choose. You are very wise to point out that this is a personal choice to be made.
