In this class, I learned how to conduct the research on the different perspectives with qualitative or quantitative method in detail. While IS 360 covers fundamental knowledge for research, IS 362 covers more detailed knowledge for research on the social science perspective. Also I read several articles related to various research styles or methods. For each article and the chapter, I posted comments including critical issues for the chapter and claim, reason, warrant, evidence, limitation and contribution for the article. Especially, through this analysis for the article, I could understand what the author wants to present about his or her study to the IS community. In addition since this text book is related to social science and includes various kinds of real examples, reading a book was interesting for me. Also when I take midterm and final exam I made summary for each chapter and this summary was very helpful for two exams and understanding aspects related to research.

The most impressive event for this semester is that I attended Persuasive Conference 2009 in our school. Since I am studying the research as a doctoral student, I could concentrate on each presenter’s research topic, research method and result. I was really exciting at each research presentation using persuasive technology. While I was watching for each research presentation I remembered some knowledge studied in the class.

I think this class and the persuasive conference encouraged me to do research. I hope I will have a good research paper within this year.

The class, Information System and Policy, is comprised of corporate information strategy, business models, IT impact on business model and organizations, IT infrastructure and IT governance. Also this class covered some cases for Amazon.com, Boeing, Canyon Ranch, Care Group, IPremier, and Dell focusing on Information technology in the organizations.

In addition I learned Porter’s five competitive forces that shape strategy for company and also learned how to prepare business plan which was a team project. Every week I read each chapter and one case and posted my opinion for question given by a professor. Then in the class we had a discussion about the topic related to the chapter and case. Especially participating class discussion was not easy for me. I realized that to participate at the class discussion, I should understand exactly for the topic for each chapter and case. At the beginning of this semester I had hard time for this issue, but I recovered this difficult situation. Moreover I understood how IT influences the organization and what the proper attitude for organization as a CIO.

When we worked on the team project, my part was to analyze our new company, Go Green IT, by Porter’s five competitive forces and SWOT(Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat) analysis. I think our member prepared final report and presentation very well.

I spent a lot of time to prepare this class every week in this semester to read number of books and articles, and to write comments. It was very hard for me, but I know it makes me strength. At the beginning of semester I had to spend a lot of time to read a book and article. However the time to read a book and article was getting shorter than before and writing comment also was getting comfortable. For four month I think I improved my English skill and research capability. Especially, class discussion was stressful enough to me, but I got adjusted in the class discussion.

Most difficult work in this class was a research paper. From the choosing topic to submission of final research paper, every step was difficult. However I finally completed the research paper including the research model and some hypotheses. Although the research paper is not qualified, I learned how to organize the structure of the research, how to extract constructs, how to analyze data collected from quantitative or qualitative method, and how to find research claim, reason, research question, warrants, and evidences.

I learned Agile approach which is a new approach to the software development in this class. Also I learned Socio-Technical Theory, Ethics Method, and GIS integration. Especially Agile approach is an impressive method for me because I was a system analyst before. I could compare traditional way and Agile approach, and find each method’s strength and weakness. Although Agile method has many advantages for software development, I still prefer traditional way because system development needs to be systematic.

Socio-technical Theory and Ethics method are really important aspects for computer-based system. Indeed, system developments have been ignored human relationship and job satisfaction, and I think it might bring low IT productivity and success and failure of system development. I will keep it mind to build efficient system with job satisfaction.

GIS integration was very useful to me. We need to know GIS because GIS components are using in the various industries these days. I learned how to integrate GIS API into a web page and how to add different functions on the map. The number of articles was very interesting since I could discover new trend for Information Systems in the world.

Most difficult work was a group project to design new system for Trauma Center. Although our group had some difficulties to adjust different opinions, we finally built prototype for Trauma Surgeon.
