I found this research class very essential for any student whether he/she is in a Master or a PhD program. The class covered different materials with different approaches which serve as basis for academic researchers. We were asked to read certain materials on a weekly basis and discuss the readings whether in form of blog entries or within the class. At the beginning, I found difficulty in catching up with readings. However, afterwards I enjoyed the reading because I was capable to link what I read with different articles from different research domains. The class enriched my research skills by exploring different research strategies and methodologies. Before taking this class, I though writing research paper was like writing an easy about certain topic. However, after going in depth with readings, I knew the fundamental principles of formulating a good research paper, how to ground my ideas on theoretical basis, and how to formulate the research questions and support them with warrants, evidences, and reasons. Moreover, delivering a research paper at the end of the class was a good practice to apply the readings on my writings. Also, the materials helped me to read critically a variety of research papers for multiple researchers in IS domain.

In this class, I have come across various topics that were very interesting to know more about. Before taking this class, I had no clue what software development is all about. However, taking this class enriched my knowledge of various aspects involved in developing and implementing software stages starting from gathering information, identifying the root problem, planning, designing, developing and implementing the system. I have learned various software development methodologies and theories including ICONEX, soft software methodology, Socio-Technical theory, Agility, and ETHICS.  The class enabled me to differentiate between those methodologies and theories and see the advantages and drawbacks of each. From this class, I have learned what can form main reasons for projects’ failure and success. Focusing on human needs is with the same significance as focusing on organizational needs in order to reach company’s objectives. This is what ETHICS methodology is based on. Having GIS portion within the class was very interesting to me. Before this class, I didn’t work practically with any GIS package or codes, but covering GIS was of a great value for building our final project for 911 dispatch system. The final prototype for 911 dispatch system was a great chance to practice what I have learned in the class in a practical way. The class gave us the chance to interview a real client and gather information needed to develop a system that deliver what the client really needs and not what he/she thinks they need. In general, I found this class is full of valuable information that I weren’t aware of before coming to it.
