IS 328- Lesson Learned
I have truly enjoyed my learning experience in this class. Using the text Enterprise Architecture as our main text, we were able to learn about what it takes to understand the business goals of an organization and how IT goals must be aligned with that of the business. I learned a lot from reading the numerous articles from Innovation Blowback, CISCO, EBay, Why CIO fail and others. I was particularly drawn to how effective Dr. Schooley used all of the different articles to discuss a number of concepts. Each article we read reinforces the topic or idea that he wanted us to learn about. The group assignments were very engaging and the class discussions were always inspiring. The course forced me to not just have a view on all the topics that were discussed, but to also appreciate my peers’ perspectives. We had a very relaxed learning environment that was created by Dr. Schooley which allowed me to grow as a scholar. The blog questions were relevant to what we read and discussed in class. Reading about UPS, learning how Santa Barbara failed its effort to form a healthcare exchange was very informative. The Big Dig was one of the articles that I found very engaging, what I also learned in the class was how to be an effective facilitator in a learning environment. I thought the class was well planned and I learned a lot. My experience was truly positive and learning was such a joy.
IS 305-Lesson Learned
As a life long learner I know learning never ends, hence what IS Analysis and Design course has done for me is encourage me to seek knowledge. I recall the first class, I was intimidated; I was intimidated because I had no idea what the class was about, what it will require of me as a student. At the same time I was excited on the learning journey I was about to embark on, understanding that for me it will not be an easy task, but that it was possible to gain some form of knowledge. At the end of the course, I have learned a lot with room to even learn much more. For the first time l learned how developers must perform a number of steps in order for them to have the opportunity to build a successful system. I learned about Agile Process and what it means in software developer’s world.
I enjoyed reading about Mumford and her contribution to the SocioTechnical theory…it is empowering to read that people account for something in the technical world; developing software mimics the world, I was blown away by that revelation, after all, we sometimes forget the human effect of the tasks we perform daily. This class exposed me to the world of software like no other, I am by no means an expert, but I finish the course knowing that when next I log in into a system I can have an appreciation for the work that went into the system to make the system what it is.
Reading and learning about GIS got me thinking, GIS’s capability affords the world in general and healthcare organization in particular to have information readily available to them with a click of a mouse. The power of GIS to gather information about west Nile virus and be able to track what geographical location is being affected through GIS is astounding. For a novice like me, I learn to use mashup to create maps that have detailed information that I need is quite cool…my hope is I will have the opportunity to learn…
What I find most rewarding about IS 305 was the Mayo Clinic project, as a class we worked as groups to come up with ways to save life using IS, this project allowed me opportunity to appreciate my peers creative skills and knowledge. It allowed me to learn in a non-intimidating environment. How would it be if what we advocated for can be implemented in a real-life emergency department- it would definitely be something (it will save many lives). I will definitely use some of the tools and information from the class in forming my opinions as I move forward in my journey for knowledge. IS 305 was a true learning experience!
