Click on the Deki Wiki home icon on the left side of the screen. Then, click on the new page button on top of the page. This way we can create a page at group level which is shown in the blue box on the right side of the screen.

I created two tags for this. One is is346 and the other one is evren which goes to my page and the other one is is346 which has been tagged by others as well.

I put the RSS feed in my subpage. In this task, I used this extension guide (http://wiki.opengarden.org/Deki_Wiki/Extensions). From this page, I got the panel code which is {{widgetbox.panel("bcef9d3c-3030-436f-841d-ed28804335a7")}} Then I got widget from the www.widgetbox.com Web site. Finally, I put the id of my widget into the code I got from the extension guide Web site.

In this task, I used the web site ((http://wiki.opengarden.org/Deki_Wiki/Extensions) as above in order to learn the code for RSS feed which is {{ feed.list("http://feeds.feedburner.com/Mindtouch", 3) }}. Then I went to the Claremont Conversation Web site to get the feed and pasted the html link into the code.

For me, it did not work because I got a blank screen when clicked on the save as pdf button. But I saw that it worked for Shantanu and Rosemary. I am not sure why I am getting the blank screen. I tried it on two different pages.

Yes a user can create a file folder himself or herself by using b2evolution's interface. To do this, you need to go to write a new post->files->personal folder->check the picture->click on img button.

6. Can a user create static pages?

In order to test this, I created a new page by selecting the page option from dropdown list on write new post screen.But, I do not think that this page was static. According to the the B2Evolution manual, it is possible to generate a static page from the main "Blogs tab" page. To do this the manual suggests clicking on the "Gen!" link next to the static filename in the third column from the right. I tried this but I could not create a static page. Furthermore, I found 2 possible problems with the static page. The first problem is that new posts do not show up on static page unless it is  re-generated. The second problem is a bug issue because it appears that there is bug in the b2blogs.php file.

The installation of phpbb3 was straightforward. I did not face any difficulties with installation.

I went to the board settings under the administration panel in order to change my board’s site name, site description, and system timezone.

In this task, I used the forums section in the administration panel. First, I created a new forum called introduce yourself. Then I went to manage forums and clicked on the edit button to rename my forum.  

5. Create a standard announcement and a poll associated with it.  What is the difference between a standard announcement and a global one?

Global announcement automatically goes on top of standard announcement. Furthermore, it appears that global announcement is more suitable for getting the attention of a user. Finally, phpbb3 puts global announcements in a table above the standard announcements.

6. Create a user rank that can only be obtained after posting a certain number of posts.  What is the difference between that type of a rank and a special rank?

Rank seems like a title that appears next a username name when a user posts something. A user’s rank can also be viewed at his or her profile. It is right below the username in the profile screen. Based on phpBB user guide, ranks could be used to show how long a user has been posting to a board or how active they are. In this context, normal ranks are assigned to users according to their post count. However, special ranks could be assigned to specific users in the user management panel. For instance, I created a new special rank called fresh with minimum posting number zero. With this rank, a user who does not have any posting automatically gets this rank.

7. Create a new usergroup called "Friends" (group type: request).

I did this by using users and groups->manage groups window. While creating this group, I noticed a number of interesting features such as copy permissions and private messages. I also added a nice avatar to my group. Once I created the friends group, I added my users to this group. I made my admin the group leader and the other user a standard member of the group.   

8. Visit one of your classmates' board, create a user for yourself, and join his or her Friends usergroup.  Update your profile and board preferences.

For this task, I joined Kate’s friends usergroup. I also posted a message on her forum related to her youtube video.

9. Create a full backup of your board's database tables by using your Administration Control Panel (ACP).

This task reminded me the full back that I did on the phpbb2’s database. Similar to that backup, I determined backup type, file type, action, and selected the tables I wanted for the back up. From my point of view, the text file that I got at the end of this process looks kind of SQL backup file.

The board’s default configuration allowed me to upload an avatar for the friends group I created. As for the postings, the (board features) of the board configuration indicates that users could attach files to their postings. To test this, I attached a picture to a posting. Thus, the default configuration allows users to attach files to their posts.

I had problems with a few videos while working on this task. It appears that some youtube videos do not work with this because I tried a few surfing videos and the output in the posting screening was [youtube] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vU32QuXppkQ[/youtube] 

Once I copied the BBCode and HTML Replacement, youtube and google video buttons appeared on my posting screen. When I clicked on these buttons I got the following tags:

[youtube][/youtube] and [googlevid][/googlevid] After this, I basically copied the link of my videos within these tags.

13. There are four main role divisions (admin, user, moderator, and forum).  How many different types of moderator roles are defined in the moderator division?

The moderator division defines 4 roles: Standard, simple, full, and queue moderator. The standard moderator can use most moderating tools, but cannot ban users or change the post author. The simple moderator can only use basic topic actions, but can not send warnings or use moderation queue. The full moderator can use all moderating features, including banning. The full moderator can use the moderation queue to validate and edit posts, but nothing else.    

14. Is there a Mod installer for phpBB3?  Does EasyMod support phpBB3?

I could not find a mod installer for phpBB3. The idea behind easymod is eliminating the process of going to each coding page and changing the codes when istalling a mod. Thus, one could install mods with just a few clicks. Based on my findings, an easymod for phpBB3 is in development.

15. Change the style of your board.

I downloaded a new style from http://www.sarkis-webdesign.com/free-phpbb3-styles.html. Then I went to the administration control panel->styles and I installed my theme style (green). During installation settings, I selected my new style as the default style of my board.

Shantanu’s MWCalendar: The installation of this extension is very simple. Just copy the MWCalendar.php file under the extension folder and add require_once(“extensions/MWCalendar.php”); to the localsettings.php file. To use it, I simply copied the example code from the web site. I find this extension useful because it could be used to coordinate team members.   

Dolly’s ImageMap: This extension is easy to install, but I could not understand what it is useful for.I will ask it to Dolly. 

Eric’s and Stephanie’s Poem Extension: With this extension, it is possible to format a text in poem format. It is also fairly easy to install and use. 

Kate’s SyntaxHighlight: I installed this extension successfully, but I did not understand how to use it. I will ask Kate.

1. Install phpBB2 (version 2.0.22)

Compared to the other tools that I have installed so far (Wordpress, MediaWiki, WikyBlog, and Elgg Wiki), I find phpBB2 easy to install, use, and administer. Once I uploaded all the files, I pointed my browser to evren.mysocialtech.comphpBB2 for installation and I entered the databasehost name, username, and password.  

2. Log in as an administrator and update your profile

To do this, I clicked on the profile link on the top of the page and I entered my signature and specified the time zone. I also used the profile screen to change the board style.

3. Create a new form

For this task, I created two categories. The first category is Session 1 and the second category is Session 2. For the Session 1 category, I created to forms. The first one is introduce yourself and the second one is discuss social computing.

4. Create a new usergroup and assign a moderator role to that usergroup

In this task, I created a usergroup called IS346 and I assigned myself as the moderator of the IS346 group. To do this, I used the group administrationManagementCreate New Group page. In this page, I specified myself as the group moderator.

5. Create a new user and make that user a member of the usergroup you have created in Step 4.

In order to create a new user I logged out of the system and registered as a new user. Then, I used the usergroups option on top of the page to send a request to the admin. Finally, I approved the access of the new user to join the IS346 group by using the admin account.

6. Change the Style of your phpBB2

I found this feature different than Wordpress and Mediawiki because style could unique for each user. In order to find a new style, I looked at the following site (http://www.phpbb.com/styles/db/?sid=6f35beaabea12d400cca5cf062f8b564). Once I found a style that I like liked, I uploaded it to the templates folder. Then I went to the styles admin. Here, first I installed the new theme by using the add button. Second, I exported the theme. Finally, I went to my user profile and selected the new theme that I installed from the board style drop down list.

However, after changing the style, I noticed some default writing that came with the new style. Thus, I went to general adminconfiguration to change the names of site name and site. Furthermore, by using this screen one could also set a particular theme as the default style of the discussion forum. The advantage of this setting is that once the admin changes the theme by using this window, the new theme will be shown even after a user logs out. Otherwise, the default (silver) theme will be used for the login screen.

Finally, it is also possible to change the logo of a theme. To do this, I found the logo of my style (logo_left.gif) and changed it with a recent surfing picture. However, the important thing here is that the dimensions of the existing and new logo should be the same.  

7. Add the URL address of your phpBB2 to your index page on mysocialtech.com

The link is http://evren.mysocialtech.com/phpBB2/index.php I also added the URL address to my index page.   

For this task, I created a template called IS346 by creating a new template page and putting the following command within this page {{IS346}}. I got the content of this template from the Course Assignments page. In order to include the content of the template page in my sample page, I added the code {{IS346}} to my sample page. The result is that the sample page which was empty in the beginning now shows the content of the IS346 template page. 

Task 2: Create a template page so that whenever you type {{T1|X|Y}} (X: Task#, Y: StudioSession#) while editing a wiki page, your Wiki automatically displays the following statement after you save the page 

In this task, I created a new template with called Task2Studio7. For the content, I wrote “This is my answer to task number 2 in studio session 7”. Then I created a new page called Answers and I acquired the content of my new template by using {{T1|2|7}} command within the Answers page. I think template is a powerful feature of Mediawiki because by using this feature I can point to several templates in a Mediawiki page. In my case, I can put my answers in different templates and call those templates in various Mediawiki pages based on my needs. 

Task 3: Include the content of a wiki page in another wiki page by using the transclusion feature of your Wiki 

In order to include the content of a wiki page in another wiki, I created a page called transclusion and I wanted to see the content of two of my pages (Page-2, Page-3) within this page. To do this added the following code into my transclusion page:

Task 4: Create a wiki page displaying an RSS feed from your blog on www.claremontconversation.org     

In the begining, I thought this task was easy but I had some problems with the template because it appears that Claremont Conversation does not support the description feature of my template because my blog did not look organized. To fix this problem, I removed the description feature of my template. Now my RSS page looks organized.

Task 5: Install and test ShareThis (MediaWiki extension)

This feature remembered me the Addthis plugin that we used in the Wordpress. Similar to the Addthis plugin, Sharethis provides links to various social bookmarking sites such as del.icio.us. I also used this extension on a particular as well as the sidebar. Compared to Wordpress, I think installing ShareThis on the Mediawiki was more difficult than installing Addthis on the Wordpress.     

Task 6: Select two pages from your Special Pages list and briefly describe the function of each page 

Page-1: View Deleted Pages  

I find this page useful because during my experience with MediaWiki (testing new features), I accidentally deleted a few pages. In this context, this restricted special page shows who created page and when it is deleted. This page also provides a log of recently deleted pages. By using this log file, an admin may restore accidentally deleted pages. 

Page-2: Block User 

This page provides a form that allows the admin to block users by specifying the following terms and conditions: IP address or username, expiry, other time, reason, additional reason, and some other features including blocking anonymous users only, preventing account creation, automatically blocking the last IP address used by a user and any subsequent IPs they try to edit from, and preventing users from sending emails.  I liked this page because it relates back to the task Stephanie provided in studio session 6. By using an admin could prevent potential abuses (sockpuppet and meatpuppet). For instance, if the MediaWiki admin finds that a certain user has a false identity for malicious purposes then the admin may use this page to block that user. However, an important element that a MediaWiki admin should consider is not to block a user infinitely for a faulty sockpuppet report.  

Task 7: Which special page shows all the extensions installed on your Wiki? 

Special:Version shows all the extensions I installed on my Wiki as well as the version of MediaWiki that is currently running. 

Task 8: Go over the extensions used by Wikipedia and install one of them to your Wiki. 

In this task, I embedded Freemind mind maps to my MediaWiki. This task was confusing to me because installation instructions did not provide links to three files necessary for installation. Furthermore, the instructions did not explain the way to overcome the mm file type upload problem. Hence, I followed the following steps: 

• Download the following file MediawikiExtension.zip
• Extract the content of this file to the extensionsfreemind directory. Do not put the FreeMind.php file under extensionsfreemind directory.
• Put the Freemind.php file under extensions directory.
• The plugin requires several other files other than the ones in the mediawikiextension.  These are freemindbrowser.jar, flashobject.js, and visorFreemind.swf.
• Download freemindbrowser.jar from here. (Use Mozilla for some reason Internet Explorer does not work!)  Flashobject.js and visorFreemind.swf files are inside FreemindFlashBrowser.zip file. Get this file from here.
• Copy  freemindbrowser.jar, flashobject.js, and visorfreemind.swf files into extensionsfreemind folder.
• Add the following code to the localsettings.php files
• include('extensions/FreeMind.php');

·        $wgFileExtensions = array( 'png', 'gif', 'jpg', 'jpeg', 'wmz', 'mm' );

• $wgVerifyMimeType = false; Without this code, there is a good possibility that you will get an error message that says that “The file is corrupt or has an incorrect extension. Please check the file and upload again.”

 To view the mindmap by using MediaWiki, simply add the following code to a page: <mm>[[Hello.mm|flash]]</mm> Although I like mindmaps, I found two limitations with this extension. The first one is inability to make changes on the mindmap and save it to mediawiki by using this extension. The second one is the lack of support for external mindmap files.

Task 9: Create a link on one of your wiki pages to a section of another wiki page.

This can be done by using the following code: [[PageName|SectionName]]

In my case, I created a link on Page-3 to the Opening Summary section of Page-2 by using the following code: [[Page-2|Opening Sumary]]

One way of doing this involves the use a special page called most linked pages. By using this page, one can easily see the number and the name of the pages that have links to a particular wiki page. Furthermore, it also possible to determine   the number of links an image has by using the most linked images special page. However, most linked images special page does not show the name of pages that have links to that particular image.

Wiki’s current setting permits the use of only a limited number of HTML elements because of a vulnerability issue. According to the Mediawiki Web site (2007), enabling the use of all HTML elements on a publicly editable site could be very dangerous. Thus, this option should not be enabled unless the users are trusted. In order to re-configure the Wiki to support full HTML coding in a wiki page, one needs to add the following line to the localsetting.php file: $wgRawHtml = true  In this context, the Mediawiki Web site (2007) suggests enabling this feature only to trusted users by using the code $wgGroupPermissions

Task 12:  Create a link on one of your wiki pages to a Wikipedia page by using your Wiki's InterWiki feature.  Does this feature also work to create a link to a wiki page that is part of another Wiki on MySocialTech.com?

I used [[Wikipedia:MediaWiki]] to create a link on my WikipediaLinkPage to the Wikipedia MediaWiki page.
