Dr. Nancy van Deusen is a professor of music at the Claremont Graduate School in Claremont California.  Nancy is also a faculty member in the Department of Medieval Studies at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary.  Since 1992 she has served as the director of Claremont’s All-College Consortium for Medieval and Early Modern Studies.  

Nancy graduated from Houghton College in New York with a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and has two Master of Music degrees from Indiana University along with a doctorate in Musicology and Music Theory. Nancy’s dissertation, titled “A Historical and Stylistic Comparison of the Graduals of Gregorian and Old-Roman Chant,” explores the origins of Gregorian and Old Roman chant with the notion that both chant traditions were derived from a common Roman ancestor in use circa 750 CE.

Nancy currently serves as the Director for Claremont’s All-College Consortium for Medieval and Early Modern Studies.  She has previously held Chairs of the faculty in Music at the Claremont Graduate School and Director for the Center for Medieval Studies at California State University.  Additional information relating to her administrative experiences can be obtained from her curriculum vita available at http://www.cgu.edu/pages/4176.asp.

Nancy has taught a number of different courses at various universities throughout the world, including the Institute of Basel in Switzerland, University of North Carolina, University of New England in Australia, California State University Northridge, Central European University in Hungary and Claremont Graduate School.  Her course offerings include notation and tablature, history of keyboard literature, Renaissance Notation, Systematic Musicology and Music Analysis and Composition.  

Aside from teaching she has extensive experience organizing conferences and publications.  Some recent conferences at Claremont Graduate University include, “Augustine” and “American Songs, American Souls: The Creation of an American Voice.”  Nancy has written five books exploring topics in music largely with a focus in medieval settings. Nancy has also written a number of articles (well over 30) and has served as editor for ten different publications.

Nancy was the 1997 Fellow for Medieval Academy of America.  She is a member of the American Musicological Society and has served as the Regional Chapter vice president and president.  Furthermore she is active in the Medieval Association of the Pacific, College Music Society and the International Musicological Society and the International Council for Traditional Music.
