1. History of Claremont Colleges

  • ? does it make a difference that the college started out as a PhD research school. Tension that is present because it started as a PhD school. (i.e. Drucker School) and that created the whole “school” concept.
  • ? tension between Phd and Master programs. Small boutique programs.
  • ? how was the formation, what was the idea? What kind of conversation?
  • Linked with consortium cgu is … separated from that. CGU is not viewed as a top ranking school by other schools.
  • Is there something in the formation that set the trajectory?
  • By separating CGU from the undergraduate colleges, (i.e. most schools live off of the undergrad) put it in the poor house. Tuition driven graduate program so it gives rise to things which otherwise do not occur. Isolated CGU? Consortium thus, a theory more than reality.
  • What kind of conversation can you have from a campus that is separated out?
  • Is it not an incomplete conversation?
  • Every president that arrives says we should collaborate with the undergrad programs.
  • Pomona barely cooperates with others, mudd, pitzer, colleges have gone up tremendously.

2. History of the T course

  • how does T course come about? How does that shape CGU’s current scholarly activities?
  • Teresa shaw, Sted? Committee decided, poverty, capital and ethics would be focus.
  • Internal person hired, wendy martin took over. Announced and interviewed.
  • Ironic that the way it was set up and created the silos driven. T program overlay.
 3. James Blaisdell biography and his vision of the Claremont Colleges.
